Microcement for Architects & Designers

A Seamless Material Finish | Melbourne Installations

Design Without Joints, Interruptions or Compromise

At Alternative Surfaces, our microcement installers have been working with designers in Melbourne since 1999. Microcement offers architects and interior designers a continuous surface system that removes traditional material constraints — enabling cohesive, sculptural and highly resolved spaces without compromising durability.

Why X-Bond Microcement Is Being Specified in High-End Projects

Spatial continuity: Eliminate grout lines and thresholds to create uninterrupted visual flow.

Tactile customisation: Characterised by subtle texture, with customisable colour and finish options.

Material cohesion: Apply the same finish across multiple interior and exterior surfaces.

Form flexibility: Wrap curved walls, stairs, vanities and bespoke elements seamlessly.

Reduced visual noise: Perfect for minimalist and contemporary interiors where restraint matters.

Thin application: Achieve a concrete aesthetic without structural weight or bulk.

The Difference In Microcement vs. Concrete

Q&A: Microcement Application Ove Tiles & More

Microcement is often described as a surface finish, but in practice, it functions as something far more considered — a complete material system.

At Alternative Surfaces, this is delivered through X-Bond: an advanced microcement overlay system designed for application across internal or external floors, walls, ceilings, wet areas, and architectural elements.

  • Engineered multi-layer microcement system for consistent, controlled application

  • Integrated at minimal thickness without significant height or weight impact

  • Bonds to a wide range of substrates including concrete, screed and existing tiles

  • Reduces need for demolition while maintaining high-performance finish

  • Designed to minimise cracking and delamination when correctly installed

  • With compatible sealing and waterproofing systems, X-Bond is CodeMark Certified for Wet Areas

Performance Meets Aesthetics

Design intent is only successful when matched by material performance. Below are frequently asked questions about the practical considerations when specifying microcement — and how a system like X-Bond responds.

Is microcement waterproof?

1

Microcement is not inherently waterproof, but it can be made suitable for wet areas when used with compatible waterproofing products.

The X-Bond system includes a waterproofing membrane and specialised sealing layer, which together create a CodeMark Certified finish that is used in all wet areas and splash zones including bathroom flooring, shower walls, and outdoor areas.

How durable is microcement in residential and commercial spaces?

2

Microcement offers a high level of durability relative to its thickness, making it suitable for both residential and commercial applications exposed to high levels of foot traffic.

We’ve installed X-Bond flooring in retail stores, office buildings, restaurants, and healthcare clinics.

Its layered system provides surface strength while maintaining slight flexibility, helping it withstand daily wear without the brittleness associated with more rigid finishes.

Is microcement difficult to maintain?

3

Maintenance requires minimal upkeep compared to other materials, like tiled surfaces.

With no grout lines to trap dirt or discolour over time, cleaning is straightforward and consistent. A simple routine of regular wiping with non-abrasive products is typically sufficient to maintain the finish.

Will microcement crack over time?

4

Not all microcement systems perform the same. Lower-grade overlays can be prone to cracking, particularly when applied over unstable substrates or without the correct preparation.

X-Bond is formulated as a flexible, multi-layer system designed to accommodate minor substrate movement, significantly reducing the risk of cracking when installed correctly — this is why it’s only applied by trained surfacing contractors.

The combination of adhesion, flexibility and a controlled application methodology is what ensures long-term performance.
