Material & Finish Swaps to Consider for Your Renovation
Some of the best opportunities to elevate your renovation can be found in the decisions you might otherwise consider a given. From the small things — think skirting boards and power points — to shower finishes, colour palettes, and driveways; rethinking the seemingly standard choices can make a real difference to the overall design feel.
Here are some of our favourite ways to reconsider familiar renovation materials and finishes for a more resolved result.
Traditional skirting boards → Shadow line detailing
Traditional skirting boards create a defined border between the wall and floor. For a more contemporary approach, shadow line detailing creates a small recessed junction that achieves a more streamlined junction.
It works particularly well alongside seamless renders such as microcement, which are thin surface coatings that can be carried across floors and walls to make these transitions feel minimal. This creates a sense of continuity throughout the space, perfect for minimalist design briefs.

White-on-white → Tonal colour drenching
There’s nothing wrong with an all-white interior, but neutral doesn’t have to mean white. Tonal colour drenching takes a single colour family and carries different shades of it across walls, ceilings, cabinetry and finishes.
Think warm sand with deeper beige, soft clay with burgundy pink, or muted greens layered with olive and sage.
The subtle shifts in tone create depth while maintaining the calm, cohesive quality that makes an all-white palette so appealing.

Shower tiles → Microcement
Tiles have long been the default for shower walls, but they aren't the only option. Microcement provides a seamless alternative, replacing repeated tile and grout lines with one continuous hand-trowelled surface.
Beyond the visual difference, removing grout lines can make the shower easier to maintain, while microcement allows the same finish to flow across walls, floors, niches, benches and other details. The result is a bathroom that feels less visually divided and more architectural.
With the appropriate waterproofing system, X-Bond Microcement can be used in wet areas including showers and bathrooms.

Concrete driveway → Stone aggregate
A concrete driveway is practical, but a stone aggregate can be a better complement for the surrounding architecture and landscaping.
Quartz Carpet uses natural stone bound with resin to create a hard-wearing, textured surface with considerably more visual variation than standard concrete. With different stone blends available, the finish can be selected to complement the tones of the home rather than feeling like a purely functional addition.
It can be particularly effective when carried across driveways, pathways and surrounding exterior areas, helping the hard landscaping feel like a considered part of the overall design.
Available in permeable finishes, Quartz Carpet can also allow water to drain through the surface rather than pooling on top, making it particularly well suited to outdoor areas where drainage is an important consideration.
Standard power outlets → Architectural outlets
It’s no secret that we love a seamless surface, and powerpoints or light switches are one of those small details that can easily interrupt an otherwise beautifully resolved wall.
Rather than automatically opting for standard white fittings, consider outlets that complement the surrounding material palette.
Slimline profiles, flush-mounted fittings and more interesting finishes in brass, bronze, black, stainless steel or colour-matched tones can make utilities feel intentionally integrated rather than added as an afterthought.
On highly detailed surfaces such as stone, timber, or microcement, choosing a fitting that works with the material can make an especially noticeable difference.
It’s a relatively small renovation decision, but one that can help create a much more resolved finish throughout the home.
