The Biggest Microcement Application Mistakes to Avoid
…and how to fix them!
Microcement is a popular choice for modern, seamless surfaces in homes and commercial spaces. However, improper application can lead to cracks, uneven textures, or poor adhesion. Whether you’re a professional installer or embarking on a DIY microcement project, knowing the most common microcement installation mistakes — and how to fix them — can save you time, money, and frustration.
1. Skipping Proper Surface Preparation
The Mistake: Applying microcement on a dirty, damp, uneven or unstable surface can lead to adhesion problems, peeling, or cracking over time.
How to Fix It:
- Always clean and degrease the surface before application.
- Ensure it is completely dry and free of dust, oil, or loose particles.
- You may need to level the surface, especially for application over tiles.
- Fix any damage in the surface prior to application, especially cracks (if you apply microcement over an open fracture, the cracking can transfer through).
2. Neglecting Proper Waterproofing
The Mistake: Assuming microcement is naturally waterproof and skipping a proper waterproofing system can lead to moisture penetration, staining, or surface deterioration — especially in bathrooms and kitchens.
How to Fix It:
- Apply a waterproofing membrane before installing microcement in wet areas.
- Use a microcement system specifically designed for high-moisture environments.
- Seal the final surface with a high-quality, water-resistant sealer.
- Regularly check and maintain the sealer to ensure ongoing protection.
3. Applying Microcement Too Thick or Too Thin
The Mistake: A layer that is too thick can lead to cracking, while a layer that is too thin may not provide enough coverage or strength.
How to Fix It:
- Apply microcement in multiple thin layers (usually 2-3mm per coat).
- Use a trowel to spread each coat evenly, and avoid excessive buildup.
- Allow each layer to dry properly before applying the next.
4. Rushing the Drying Process
The Mistake: Speeding up drying with heaters or failing to respect curing times can weaken the final result.
How to Fix It:
- Allow each layer to dry naturally for the recommended time.
- Maintain a stable room temperature (ideally between 15-25°C).
- Wait at least 24-48 hours before applying sealers or topcoats.
5. Not Using the Right Sealer
The Mistake: A poor-quality or incompatible sealer can lead to stains, water absorption, or surface degradation.
How to Fix It:
- Choose a high-quality sealer for durability and stain resistance.
- Allow it to cure properly — this means no washing your microcement floors for at least a week after installation.
- Reapply the sealer periodically to maintain protection (for decorative applications, this won’t be as much of a concern as it is for high-traffic flooring).
6. Ignoring Expansion Joints
The Mistake: Covering existing expansion joints can cause cracks when the substrate moves.
How to Fix It:
- Never apply microcement directly over expansion joints.
- In this case, expansion gaps or saw cuts will be required — engage a professional installer if needed.
Microcement is a fantastic material when applied correctly, offering a finish that’s both beautiful and durable. By avoiding these common mistakes, you can achieve a flawless result that lasts for years.
If you’re not confident in your skills with a trowel, are tackling a large area, or aren’t familiar with substrate preparation and waterproofing process, it’s best to hire a surfacing professional to ensure the best result.
