Remodel Without Removal
An alternative cost saving option for your project
Resurfacing with an overlay
If you’re in the process of renovating, you’ll likely be looking for new materials and finishes to transform your space. The traditional method for resurfacing was to rip up your existing flooring or wall finish, and install a new one from scratch. This can be time consuming, expensive, inconvenient, and contributes increased environmental waste to landfill.
An overlay is a modern surfacing solution to remodelling without demolition. It refers to any surface material that can be installed directly over an existing substrate. At Alternative Surfaces, we’ve been specialising in the installation of seamless surface overlays for almost 30 years. Our range includes multiple products that allow Remodel Without removal, including the world’s first microcement system X-Bond.
No demolition. No chemical removal. No sandblasting
X-Bond Microcement
Suitable for remodelling floors, walls, ceilings and joinery
X-Bond is a cementitious overlay system that’s hand-trowelled at approximately 3mm thick over an existing substrate to create a concrete looking finish. X-Bond is the most advanced microcement topping on the market thanks to its innovative molecular technology, meaning it forms a strong chemical bond to a wide range of surfaces — including concrete, tiles, stone, slate, plasterboard, villa board, brick, FC sheeting, MDF and more.
Quartz Carpet
Suitable for remodelling floors
Quartz Carpet is a durable and resilient floor finish consisting of coloured quartz stones and an epoxy binder. It’s installed between 5-7mm thick for foot traffic and 8-10mm thick for vehicle traffic. Some of the most common applications are driveways and garages, as well as commercial flooring. Quartz Carpet flooring is perfect for creating a seamless appearance with a textured feel.
How? X-Bond and Liquid Membrane
Now with the addition of our Liquid Membrane, the Remodel Without Removal method is more effective than ever. Liquid Membrane acts as both a waterproof and anti-fracture layer. Applied underneath X-Bond, it prepares and stabilises challenging substrates like timber, tiles, and uneven surfaces. With over 1300% elongation and superior adhesion, it’s one of the most advanced membranes on the market. It expands what’s possible, making X-Bond suitable for nearly any application.
For showers and other wet areas, our installers will use Liquid Membrane for primary waterproofing. If you want to achieve concrete-looking furniture pieces, we can construct the base out of MDF or timber, and then use Liquid Membrane to help the X-Bond adhere. Below, you’ll find before-and-after images showcasing just how adaptable X-Bond is, used across wet areas, joinery, and floors as examples. But if it’s a smooth, level, and stable surface — chances are you can X-Bond it!
