Discover Our Microcement System: X-Bond

Made from stone and liquid polymers, X-Bond has been our microcement of choice since 1999. It can be applied directly over materials like MDF, laminate, marine ply, and compressed sheeting. It creates a continuous, joint-free finish that mimics the look of concrete but with more versatility — ideal for creating custom pieces from scratch or refurbishing old design elements.

Key Benefits:

  • Applied at 2-3mm thick to minimise structural load

  • Guaranteed resistance to de-lamination (when installed and sealed correctly)

  • Hand-trowelled for unique, artisanal texture options

  • Can be used on joinery/furniture in wet areas and external areas

Common Microcement Joinery/Furniture Applications

We’ve installed X-Bond to joinery and furniture in retail stores, commercial offices, hospitality venues, and private residences. Just some of these applications include:

  • Tables

  • Benches

  • Countertops

  • Planters

  • Desks

  • Seating

  • Sinks and basins

  • Cupboards and cabinet door faces

  • Shelving and storage units

In most instances, prior to application, the area will be prepared with a two-in-one anti-fracture and waterproofing membrane (note that Alt. Surfaces cannot be responsible for substrate failure, where the existing substrate moves and causes damage to the overlay).

How to Maintain Microcement Furniture & Joinery

Microcement furniture is designed to be both beautiful and functional — made to be lived with and enjoyed. With proper care and maintenance, your surfaces will stay looking their best for years to come.

To clean, simply wipe with water (and a mild detergent if needed). Avoid any products containing harsh or abrasive ingredients, especially solvent-based solutions like acetone with concentrations over 50%. Most standard household cleaners are safe to use.

Other tips for cleaning your microcement joinery and furniture include:

  • Avoid cleaning the X-Bond surface during the first week after installation, not even with water. This allows the sealers to fully cure.

  • For outdoor settings, you can hose down the surface or use low- or high-pressure washing equipment as needed.

  • Best to use placemats or chopping boards on benchtops and tables.

  • In wet areas, dry the surfaces with a soft cloth sooner rather than later — while microcement is resistant to mould and stains, this helps preserve its finish.

  • Clean up spills and residues promptly, especially for substances like nail polish remover, citrus juice, or oil.

X-Bond Joinery Finishes

As it’s a hand-applied render, microcement can be customised into different textures. We can finish your X-Bond Microcement flooring with three different textures, applied using different tools and techniques.

Our most popular texture option. A smooth, sleek-feeling finish that features visible trowel marks for subtle variations in tone and texture.

X-Bond Luma

Undergoes a unique application process to imitate the natural characteristics of raw concrete. This involves spraying X-Bond onto the substrate before smoothing it out using a trowel, creating a contrast of smooth and rough textures.
